🍴 Shär Puff Pastry Dough – My HEART Exam 🩺🥐

Disclaimer: I bought this with my own money. I’m a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, but I’m not your Nurse Practitioner. This review is just my personal opinion—what works for me might not work for you. Everyone’s health and dietary needs are unique, so always chat with your own healthcare professional before making any changes.

H = Health 💊

Today’s patient: Shär’s Puff Pastry.
Vitals: Certified gluten-free ✅, lactose-free ✅, wheat-free ✅. Comes frozen with two pastry sheets per box.

Nutritional stats per serving:

  • 80 calories

  • 6g fat (2.5g saturated)

  • 7g carbs (1g fiber)

  • 0g protein

So no, this isn’t kale-level nutrient-dense—but when I load my chicken pot pie with veggies, I feel like we balance the chart just fine. 🥕🥦

E = Eating 🍽️

I’ll be honest—I expected “meh,” but wow. It actually tasted buttery without the butter. 🧈 The top baked up beautifully crisp and golden, while the middle stayed soft (maybe too soft… I probably needed a little more bake time).

👉 Flavor verdict: light, flaky, cozy, and versatile. Not sweet on its own, so I can see this working for savory or sweet experiments.

A = Accessibility 🛒

I picked mine up at Jewel-Osco on sale for $8.99 (two-pack). I haven’t spotted it everywhere, but Shär’s website does have a product locator. It’s… a little glitchy. 🖥️ (nurse diagnosis: website murmur). Some products are available online, but you may need to do a little hunting.

R = Rhythm Rating 🫀

This puff pastry is a solid Sinus Rhythm: steady, reliable, and easy to use. Directions were clear, dough was pliable, and the texture gave me the mix of crispy + soft layers I was hoping for.

As someone who eats gluten and dairy free, I really appreciate that Shär gives us an option for puff pastry—because those are rare finds in the wild.

T = Tell Others 📣

From my kitchen to yours—here’s what I’d do differently next time:
1️⃣ Pull it out of the freezer 4 hours ahead (nurse error, I rushed dinner).
2️⃣ Spray the dish with avocado oil before pressing in the dough.
3️⃣ Use my baking dish as a stencil to pre-cut top + bottom layers.
4️⃣ Always parbake the bottom crust (no one wants soggy bottoms).
5️⃣ Egg wash = golden glow ✨ (don’t skip it).
6️⃣ Try seasoning the pastry lightly (garlic? yes, please).

I had fun experimenting with leftovers—made a few mini pot pies with different puff pastry “treatments.” Even sprinkled one with Kinder’s salt-pepper-garlic. All three turned out like little nursing students who passed clinicals—different approaches, all successful. 🩺🎉

✅ Final Diagnosis:

Shär Puff Pastry is now a repeat prescription in my freezer. It’s not the healthiest “patient,” but it’s a treat that performs well, plays nice with fillings, and fills a gluten + dairy free gap in the pastry market.

✨ Live safe, happy, healthy. ✨
