🩺 HEART Exam Review: Catalina Crunch Protein Cereal (Cinnamon Toast Flavor)
H = Health
This cereal has a European Certified Gluten-Free symbol ✅ and is Non-GMO. The box does note that it’s made in a kitchen with peanuts, soy, milk, and tree nuts — important info if you’re super sensitive. I have a dairy allergy but I’ve eaten it several times with no issues.
Each serving has 11g protein, 9g fiber (my GI tract sends its thanks 🙌), and a good dose of calcium. Fun fact: as estrogen decreases with age, women often struggle to keep calcium levels steady in the bloodstream. Since our bodies only absorb ~500mg calcium at a time, it’s important to spread calcium-rich foods throughout the day. Most people rely on dairy for this, but since I can’t, I supplement with food sources + a daily 500mg calcium tablet. For more evidence-based info, check out NIH.gov.
E = Eating
Flavor-wise, it does remind me of a certain “cinnamon toast” childhood favorite — though the cinnamon-sugar punch is lighter. I don’t eat it plain; I usually pair it with cashew yogurt, a sprinkle of extra cinnamon, and a dash of brown sugar. Honestly, I eat cereal more often as a snack (yes, even at movie night instead of popcorn 🍿).
👩⚕️ NP Storytime: When I worked with families in lower socio-economic settings, I often reminded parents that fortified cereals can be an affordable way to get key vitamins & minerals. Sure, not perfect (hello, sugar), but no diet is. Sometimes, we work with what’s accessible.
A = Accessibility
I snagged a giant 1.5lb bag at Costco for $12.89. I haven’t checked smaller grocery stores yet, but Costco has been my go-to.
R = Rhythm
Rating: Sinus Rhythm ✅ (Steady, reliable, I’d eat again). Bonus: makes a fantastic “puppy chow” or cereal bar base with marshmallows, nuts, and more cinnamon.
T = Telling Others
Told my mom (a GF/DF recipe magician 🧑🍳) and she immediately suggested I make cereal bars. Haven’t told my sister yet, but she loves cinnamon sugar as much as I do — so it runs in the family!
