❤️ The HEART Exam: Catalina Crunch Protein Cereal (Cinnamon Toast Flavor)

Hi friends! Today’s exam is all about Catalina Crunch Protein Cereal – Cinnamon Toast flavor. Let’s see how it performs on the HEART Exam (my gluten- and dairy-free review system designed by a Pediatric NP who still loves to “chart,” just now on food).

H = Health 🩺

This cereal proudly sports the European Certified Gluten Free symbol and is also Non-GMO. The label does mention it’s made in a facility that processes peanuts, soy, milk, and tree nuts.

Even with my dairy allergy, I’ve safely enjoyed this cereal multiple times without symptoms. Each serving delivers 11g of protein, 9g of fiber, and a decent boost of calcium — three nutrients that keep my GI system (and my bones!) happy.

💡 Nutrition Note:
As estrogen levels naturally decrease with age, women can experience a harder time maintaining healthy calcium levels. Since I can’t rely on dairy, I intentionally include calcium-rich foods throughout my day (and take a 500 mg supplement — always check with your provider).

E = Eating (Taste Test) 🍽️

This cereal definitely channels memories of that other cinnamon toast cereal from my childhood — just with a lighter cinnamon-sugar flavor.

When I worked with families in lower socioeconomic settings, I often reminded parents that many cereals are fortified with essential vitamins and minerals. They might not be perfect, but they can still be part of a balanced diet. (No diet is perfect — we work with what’s accessible!)

Personally, I don’t eat this cereal solo. I love mixing it into cashew yogurt, adding a touch of brown sugar, and an extra dash of cinnamon. It’s one of my go-to “movie night snacks” instead of popcorn.

A = Accessibility 💸

I grab mine from Costco — $12.89 for a 1.5 lb bag. I haven’t seen it at my smaller local grocery stores yet, but it’s also available online through major retailers.

R = Rhythm Rating 🫀

I’m calling this one a Sinus Rhythm — steady, reliable, and something I’d keep stocked for a quick, protein-rich snack or cereal bar recipe.

💡 Bonus tip: This cereal works perfectly in a gluten- and dairy-free puppy chow or as a cereal bar base.

T = Tell Others 📣

I’ve already told my mom (who’s the master of gluten- and dairy-free recipe remixes). Her idea? Turn this cereal into cinnamon-nut cereal bars with a touch of melted marshmallow. Yum! My sister’s next on the list — we’re all cinnamon lovers in this family.

🥗 Nutrition Pulse + MyPlate Check

Serving tested: ¾ cup cereal

Nutrition highlights:

  • Calories: 110 | Protein: 11g | Fiber: 9g | Fat: 5g

  • Key minerals: Calcium, Iron, Magnesium

Why this matters:
Protein supports muscle and tissue repair, fiber supports digestion and fullness, and calcium supports bone health — all big wins for this cereal.

MyPlate tip:
Pair your bowl with a side of fruit (like berries or banana slices) and a fortified plant-based milk or yogurt to round out your meal.

✨ Final Diagnosis:
Catalina Crunch Protein Cereal earns a Sinus Rhythm ❤️ — steady, reliable, and nutritionally sound. It’s not the sugary childhood cereal of your past, but it’s a grown-up version that fuels your body and fits a gluten- and dairy-free lifestyle.

Stay safe, happy, and healthy! 💕
